Manic Monday has delivered and it has given us some incredible stories on the women’s side of the draw as 16 became 8 as we found out who our quarter finalist would be.
No wins in five appearances, first quarter final!
What a story for Zhang Shuai!
Zhang has been coming to Wimbledon since 2011 and in her five main draw appearances has never recorded a win. This year she now has won four in a row to make it to her first Wimbledon quarter final.
On route to this stage she has just seen off 19 year old Dayana Yastremska dropping her first set of the tournament, Yanina Wickmayer and has seen off the two Carolines; Garcia and Wozniacki.
Most of Zhang’s best results of late have come on the doubles tour where she has been partnering Sam Stosur and the duo won the Australian Open together at the beginning of the year.
Elina’s first Wimbledon Quarter Final!
Elina Svitolina came into Wimbledon low on wins and maybe confidence. It did feel like it would be a case of ‘save your season’ for the Ukrainian but she has impressed me at Wimbledon.
A lot has been spoken about her on/off relationship with Gael Monfils but it is good to see her playing well.
She got a bit lucky in round two as Gasparyan had her card marked and it looked like she was going home but the Russian had to retire with an injury just after being broken and could barely walk.
Elina has backed it up and shown she has belong here to make her first quarter final. She was impressive in her three set win against Maria Sakkari and against Petra Martic I thought she held her own very well again. The Croat did have a problem and required the trainer out for her shoulder but still Elina stayed strong on her game.
First Quarter Final in 5 years!
For the second time in her career and for the first time in five years Barbora Strycova is through to another Wimbledon quarter final.
The 33 year old who like Zhang has found more success on the doubles lost in round one in Melbourne and Paris this year but has reeled off four in a row for her second Wimbledon quarter final.
It did look like being the end of the road in round four for the Czech player but from 4-6 2-5 down and Elise Mertens serving for the match Strycova turned it around with Mertens winning just two more games in what turned out to be a 6-4 5-7 2-6 loss for the Belgian who suffered a back problem in the third.
Riske’s Run Continues!
What a story out on Court 2!
The run of Alison Riske continues as she took out world number one Ash Barty ending the Australian’s 15 match winning streak.
Riske herself has been in good form coming into Wimbledon with two grass titles and once again came from a set behind at Wimbledon to win. She has now done it against Belinda Bencic, Donna Vekic and Ash Barty! Her match against Jorovic she dropped the second set.
Since her first round defeat to Andrea Petkovic at Roland Garros the American has won 14 of her last 15 matches and is now in her first Grand Slam quarter final!
