Roger and Rafa’s semi-final meeting at Wimbledon was their first since a memorable day back in 2008 which was Rafael Nadal’s first title at the All England Club.
The tennis that day was as good as you’ll ever get.
The first set went to Rafael Nadal and the second set quickly followed suit for the Spaniard.
At 4-4 in the second his tenacious defence probed away at Federer behind the baseline and found three break points. One was saved but a cross court forehand put the Spaniard in full control and before you know it led Federer by two sets to love.
Federer was searching for a sixth consecutive Wimbledon title and would need a big turn around.
The third and fourth set would have to be decided by a tie-breaker.
In the third, Federer led;
Centre Court erupted. 7-5, set sealed with an ace out-wide.
A wayward backhand from Federer gave Nadal a 5-2 lead in the tie-break…
A double fault, 5-3 Nadal.
An error, 5-4 Nadal.
5-5, 5-6 Federer with set point…
Fastforward a few moments.
At 7-7 Rafael Nadal comes up with a stunning running forehand passing shot down the line. 8-7, championship point!
Backhand down the line form Federer, bottom corner. 8-8.
A mini-break and a backhand long and were in a fifth set!
The set went on and on, tension on Centre Court had never been greater.
At 7-7 the Spaniard found his groove.
His backhand cross court was like a bullet and set up two big break points which were saved by Roger taking us back to deuce.
Another came for Rafa following a backhand into the net and a long ball led to Nadal break and serving for his first Wimbledon title!
Sealed on the error from Federer and Rafael Nadal had won Wimbledon in one of the greatest matches tennis has ever seen!
6-4 6-4 6-7 6-7 9-7!
4 hours 48 minutes of relentless tennis.
