Simona Halep is having a chill year, you wouldn’t have thought it.
Wimbledon champion and the holder of the longest residency of active players in the top 10 going back over five years the Romanian has been a bit more chilled this year but that was the plan.
Three major final defeats on the bounce led to massive pressure on herself at Roland Garros last year, Halep put soo much into that tournament and the mental strength she showed was incredible.
Halep admitted during her pre-season for this year she didn’t put in as much work as she normally does. She had more time to herself, family and friends and had fun.
Her Roland Garros didn’t go to plan, her form for the season had been ok. There were issues in her game which needed lining out but the base never goes away.
Halep was blown off the court by 17 year old Amanda Anisimova and she decided to take herself away.
She went with her team and former coach Darren Cahill to Romania for the Cluj Sports Festival and had fun.

Simona was asked whether Darren will return to the team with Daniel Dobre? She said she hopes he does. Darren decided at the end of last year to have a year off coaching and spend more time with his family and TV duties.
Simona Halep returned to Romania with the Wimbledon trophy and was greeted to over 30,000 fans in the national stadium chanting her name.
It has been announced that Simona will also be the Olympic Flag Bearer for Romania at the 2020 Olympics where she has her sights set on any medal.
Halep will also be teaming up with Horia Tecau by all sounds of things for the mixed doubles.
They have played mixed together before at Roland Garros in 2016 but lost in round one but at the 2015 US Open they made it to the quarter finals where they lost to Martina Hingis and Leander Paes.
There is now a lot of work to do in the coming months for Halep who has a title to defend in Canada and was runner-up in Cincinnati before the US Open.
I am interested to see how Halep approaches this next month because there are points to defend and ranking could drop back down to 8th but we will have to wait and see.
