The week is only a couple of days old and there have already been plenty of stories grabbing the eyes of the tennis world.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is now stranger to a battle and I’m pleased to see the Frenchman win his first match against a top 20 opponent for the first time since 2017. The former Australian Open finalist 6-4 2-6 7-5 against world number eight and second seed in Washington Karen Khachanov.
On the ladies side of the draw for many Americans it was a day to forgot with Sloane Stephens, Coco Gauff and Madison Keys all going home in round one without a set won.
Sloane and Madison were the top seeds in Washington with Madison Keys losing to 17 year old American Hailey Baptiste who was making her main draw debut.
Not on the main tour but on the challenger circuit this week does see the return of Hyeon Chung following multiple injuries and an on-going back problem.
Down at 166 in the rankings the South Korean is the second seed this week and kicks off his return on Wednesday. Here’s hoping everything goes back to plan for Chung!
Across the other side of the world we also have Grigor Dimitrov who of course fell to his career worse defeat in Atlanta and faced a tough round one in Los Cabos.
The Bulgarian came through 7-6 4-6 7-6 against Steve Johnson and was 2-5 down in the first set to set up a meeting now with second seed Guido Pella.
