Out on Court 3 at Winston-Salem a match took place on Monday between Duckhee Lee and Henri Laaksonen.
It was the 21 year old South Korean’s first main draw appearance at an ATP event and one he will not forget winning 7-6 6-1 but there was more to it than that.
Duckhee Lee ranked at 212 in the world became the first deaf player to win a main draw match on the tour.
Lee spoke about his nervousness and excitement ahead of his first main draw match on the tour but has always enjoyed playing in the heat and is known in the Korean media as “The Guy of the Summer”
He was six years old when he realised he was deaf and growing and doing what he loves he did face people making fun of him which is a shame but is a lesson to never give up on your dreams.
Lee himself has said he can’t hear anything and if someone screams or yells or if there are horns he can hear slightly.
Lee can’t hear the ball, any calls from line judges his main focus is on the ball and the gesture of his opponents.
Next up is third seed Hubert Hurkacz for the Korean at Winston-Salem.
