Karolina Muchova is a Czech on the rise.
The recently turned 23 year old has lately cracked the top 50 having only played on the main tour for just over a year and began her season outside the top 140 in the world.
Muchova made the headlines at Wimbledon in her first appearance down at SW19 when she defeated fellow Czech Karolina Pliskova in the fourth round. Muchova’s performance especially in the deciding set was outstanding.
It was the definition of hanging into rallies and kept getting the ball back. We did look on for what would have been our first 12-12 with the new rules at Wimbledon in play this year but the 22 year old had other ideas securing her biggest career win.
Next up for Muchova was Elina Svitolina but the in-form Ukrainian who came into Wimbledon lacking form did perform very well in her 7-5 6-4 victory against the Czech player.
Another big stage and an opportunity against Serena Williams at Flushing Meadows.
First five games, Muchova was faultless and had Serena worried.
The compact and confident way she hits the ball is so good to watch.
The backhand (yellow) has such a nice snap to it. She can push it down the line or cross-court even under pressure. Likewise with the forehand (blue) we saw her dig it out under pressure from Serena pulling it cross-court but also effective painting the line.
First five games we saw the intent from Muchova and Serena was worried. Serena was hitting well but she couldn’t get into the rhythm of Muchova’s groundstrokes. Serena had to go for it at this point and attacked the serve and it crumbled.
9/26 points won on the second was a concern. We were talking service return winners but that control of a point went immediately. Serena sent everything back with interest and is a part of her game which does need some work. Speed wise I thought she served well but it was too inviting the positioning of the ball in the service box.
There was a special guest in Muchova’s box at the US Open.
Actress Rebel Wilson.
Rebel texted Muchova last year at the US Open after her win against Muguruza saying ‘WOW, liked her game, went for dinner in New York and have been friends since. Rebel was in Muchova’s box at Wimbledon too earlier on in the year.
