Naomi Osaka is safely through to the fourth round at the US Open.
The defending champion and world number one picked up her tenth successive win at Flushing Meadows following a 6-3 6-0 win against the 15 year old Coco Gauff.
Coco was making her Arthur Ashe debut tonight and it was not the result she wanted but can walk away with her head held high from what was a good performance and better than a scoreline of 6-3 6-0 suggests.
Coco did battle quite well with Naomi during the early exchanges but it was the two time major champion who unleashed her ground strokes and went from strength to strength in the first set.
The second set turned into a bit of an awkward watch especially the third game.
After an immediate break of serve giving Naomi a 1-0 followed by 2-0 lead the pressure was on Coco to hold and it unravelled.
In the first set she averaged 23 seconds between points, second set 19 seconds between points but in that third game was around 14 seconds between points. The American rushed and the errors and double faults flew off the racket.
Having been broken for 3-0 and then 4-0 she looked up to her box lost. Annabel Croft on commentary earlier on in the set mentioned how Gauff looked stressed and close to tears in a position she has never really been in.
Coco did show great character as she looked for that hold of serve in the set and constructed some very good points to see game point but the occasion got to her and the errors kept coming as Naomi Osaka took just over an hour to win 6-3 6-0.
A very nice moment happened at the end of the match.
Naomi went over to console the American and invited her to take part in the on-court interview with her.
Naomi spoke about her she did amazing, the fact they have practiced together before and even congratulated her family in her box for raising a lovely girl and enjoyed playing at the same courts as them in Florida a few years back.
The performance from Naomi was fantastic and she even said she is feeling much more focused and hasn’t felt like this since Melbourne so watch out…
Also credit to Coco Gauff for another great tournament, she is 15 after all and Naomi showed us what a class act she is!
