There has been no confirmation but the noise is that no matter what happens in the US Open final against Bianca Andreescu it will be the end of Serena Williams’ season.
The former world number one is set to shut down her season early once again.
Obviously she didn’t play after New York in 2017 as she was on Maternity leave. In 2018 after that US Open final she decided to close her year down and in 2016 and 2015 pulled out injured.
The last time she played post New York was in 2014.
Serena played in Wuhan but lost to Alize Cornet having to retire at 6-5 in the first set injured. She returned the week after to Beijing and withdrew before her match against Sam Stosur injured.
Serena turned up at the WTA Finals and won the lot despite that round robin 6-0 6-2 defeat to Simona Halep she turned the tables in the final winning 6-3 6-0 against the Romanian.
It does come as a surprise but not a shock with the focus shifting to Melbourne next year for her. I wouldn’t expect her to do a warm-up event either, she rarely does. Serena has done Hopman Cup before but that isn’t happening.
