Nadal’s night in New York despite a spirited Medvedev fight!

Rafael Nadal is the US Open champion.

I think I owe a slight apology as I did write off his chances right after his Rogers Cup win but as the best fell short he continued to deliver.

A match that looked to be plain-sailing for the Spaniard up two sets to love and a break in the third suddenly got tricky.

Daniil Medvedev pulled it out, he left it all out there throughout the fortnight and I was shocked but pleasantly surprised to see how he coped with the relentless hitting from Rafa and turned the tables on the 19 time major champion.

You couldn’t fault anything Medvedev did in that match to come from two sets and a break down to be level at two sets each and 4-4 in the fifth is quite something in you’re first major final!

However, it was Rafa’s night.

There was a moment of potential doubt for Nadal but when it mattered late on in the fifth he pulled it together to win his 19th major title.

Incredible achievement for a guy who has executed his game perfectly over the course of the fortnight at Flushing Meadows.

I don’t think anyone does better scheduling and game management throughout the year than Nadal in all honesty. I liked the way his game progressed as the tournament went on and the opponents became tougher and it caught people out even though the basis of his game is his bread and butter.

19 Grand Slams, first male player over 30 to win 5 major titles in the Open Era and suddenly a shot at world end number one…
