Coco Gauff has won her first WTA title, she is 15 and doesn’t turn 16 until March!
This run to her first title had the feeling of a Disney film to it.
A week ago she lost in the second round of qualifying against Tamara Korpatsch but after some main draw withdrawals she was next in line for a lucky loser spot.
That lucky loser spot she filled and didn’t look back on route to her first WTA title.
R1 – Stefanie Voegele – 6-3 7-6
R2 – Kateryna Kozlova – 4-6 6-4 2-0
QF – Kiki Bertens – 7-6 6-4
SF – Andrea Petkovic – 6-4 6-4
F – Jelena Ostapenko 6-3 1-6 6-2
You cannot fault her game or mental strength. To go and do once again what she has done is incredible.
She is 15 years old and recorded her first top 10 win against Shenzhen hopeful Kiki Bertens. One player who will be very thankful for the weeks results will be Belinda Bencic as it keeps her contention for a place in the WTA Finals.
This week also confirmed Coco will be in the top 100 for the first time and will be a direct entrant for the Australian Open.
On Monday, she will be ranked around 71 in the world at the age of 15!
Things did get a little tense in the match as expected serving for the bagel at 5-0 in the deciding set the American was broken back but got the job done a couple of games later.
Coco becomes just the second female player to win a WTA title as a lucky loser.
Olga Danilovic at the age of 17 last year won the event in Moscow as a lucky loser. There are stories are previous lucky loser winners but no official records of this.
