I’m gutted in all honesty.
Kiki Bertens is in the WTA Elite Trophy as the top seed and now there is added pressure to end her season on a high.
75 matches got played between January and late September and having occupied a spot for so long where did it go wrong?
Performances dipped as the season progressed. Why is that? Did the injury/illness she picked up at Roland Garros derail her season but was scheduling not great.
Overall you could say a good season which it was but still it felt like it was one of underachievement topped off by not making it to Shenzhen.
There have been seven round two exits this year and four of those have come from after receiving a BYE in round one. Even at the majors just six wins across the four events this year.
It has been inconsistent. Even lately it was semi-finals then back to back round one exits. A trip home to Holland worried me when she was a set (6-0) and a break up against Alison Riske in the final and lost. If she’d have won it she’d be here.
Having to pull out of Roland Garros ill did disrupt her rhythm and was considered a favourite there. I saw her in Madrid a few weeks earlier win the title and she was unplayable. That tennis has been few and far between since then.
75 singles matches across 26 events is a lot to juggle. 51 wins and 24 defeats is almost a record of 1 defeat for every 2 wins and her numbers don’t back up well.
432 aces in 75 matches (Very good!) is an average of 5.76 a match
319 double faults in 75 matches is mad and is an average of 4.25 a match.
Those free points won on serve with the aces go out the window.
319 is third on the WTA list this year. Ostapenko leads the unwanted stat with a shocking 436 double faults in 51 matches which is an average of 8.54 a match.
It’s sad Kiki isn’t there but it’s been too inconsistent. Scheduling needs to be a bit better as she hasn’t had time off and that serve needs sharpening because you need cheap points and at the moment she cancels herself out.
Pressure now to save her season in Zhuhai at the Elite Trophy? Most definitely!
