Belinda Bencic will be a debutant at the WTA Finals in Shenzhen.
Her place in the final eight went to the wire following her round one exit in Linz just over a week ago but has Coco Gauff to thank for halting Kiki Bertens who misses out.
A week in Moscow would decide who will qualify.
Belinda Bencic had to better Kiki Bertens result and being in the same half it meant they could have met. It was another Kiki, Mladenovic who had a big say seeing off Kiki Bertens in the quarter finals meaning Bencic had to reach the final to qualify.
She went one better, she won the title.
It has been a very good year for Belinda Bencic.
No one has more top 10 ranked wins that Belinda this year who has won 9 against the top 10 on the tour. 4 of those wins of course came in Dubai when she bulldozed her way to the title there with all four encounters going to three sets.
A first semi-final appearance at Indian Wells, Madrid and the US Open added to a great year for the 22 year old who has been on tour for some time having played in 508 career WTA matches.
This year she began ranked at 55 in the world and consistency has been her theme making it now to a career high of number 7.
She has had her fair share of injury concerns in her short career to date but I am pleased to see her play so well!
She may be the last two qualify and will be seeded at 7th taking over Elina Svitolina but she isn’t there to make up the numbers. I like how well thought and composed her game is. Belinda when hitting those groundstrokes well is super tough to stop and she will pose a big threat to the field.
