WTA Finals Day 1; Barty sends out a warning, Kvitova left wondering & Osaka secures 11th win in a row!

Starting off the first Sunday with a win in Shenzhen is never a bad thing to do at the WTA Finals.

Debutant and world number one Ashley Barty found her grove against last minute qualifier Belinda Bencic after dropping the first set 5-7. The level of the world number one in the second and third set will send out a warning to the rest of the field.

Ash didn’t just turn up but she did it in style against Bencic really finding her game and dropping three games after losing that first set in her 5-7 6-1 6-2 victory on Day 1.

Earlier on in the day saw Naomi Osaka and Petra Kvitova in action in what was a tense affair.

Naomi Osaka showed us why she is the inform player on the WTA tour since the US Open with a strong 7-6 4-6 6-4 win over Petra Kvitova who will be left thinking ‘what could have been?’.

Petra played well, she hit the ball solid but there were some issues with her game and it cost her after orchestrating good position.

3-1 up in first set and lost it 7-6 on a one-sided (7-1 Osaka) tiebreak. In the first set she created 7 break point chances taking just 1, Naomi created 1 and took it.

Second set she was up a break immediately and serving for a 3-0 lead she was broken, Petra went onto win the set this time and in the third went a break down very early on and never got a look-in as Naomi served the opening win.

Kvitova does have Bencic and Barty left to play in the group. Just a couple of weeks ago she met both in Beijing winning 6-3 6-3 against Bencic and losing 6-4 4-6 3-6 to Barty.

Day two in Shenzhen will see Karolina Pliskova take on Elina Svitolina followed by Bianca Andreescu v Simona Halep.
