Everything that could have happened in Shenzhen today did happen.
We woke up to the news that former world number one Naomi Osaka had withdrawn from the tournament due to a shoulder injury. She sustained the injury in the Beijing final and it flared up again in her win against Petra Kvitova.
With about two hours notice and having played in Zhuhai a few days ago the first alternate Kiki Bertens was drafted in.
Having narrowly missed out on qualifying the Madrid champion was not going to waste her opportunity and upset the Barty Party which has been put on hold. Bertens came from a set down to win against the world number delaying her potential progression to the semi-finals 3-6 6-3 6-4.
Later on in the day saw the two ladies who lost by two sets to one on Day 1 up against each other.
Belinda Bencic took on Petra Kvitova and we are no where near knowing who is going through to the semi-finals after two played in the Red Group.
Bencic saw off the former Wimbledon champion 6-3 1-6 6-4 to keep her hopes alive and that second set for Petra Kvitova could save her a place in the semi-finals.
On Thursday we will have Belinda Bencic up against Kiki Bertens and Ash Barty up against Petra Kvitova.
This is the scenario, make sense of it if you can…
It makes sense… right?
