Another day see’s another withdrawal from the WTA Finals.
Following the withdrawals of Naomi Osaka and Bianca Andreescu it was Kiki Bertens who this time had to call her run as alternate in Shenzhen to an early end.
Her match against Belinda Bencic would decide who would qualify for the semi-finals to face Elina Svitolina and it was a really good encounter.
It was Bertens who got the first look in really soaking up the pressure coming from the racket of the 22 year old and at 5-4 would serve for the set. Things quickly turned around for Bencic as from 3-5 won four games on the bounce to take the set 7-5.
At a change of ends a couple of games before Bertens was talking to her coach and was crying. Her back seemed to be a problem for her as the first set came towards its conclusion and after the first game of the second set decided to call it a day.
It is a shame for Bertens, I am pleased that she made it in the end to Shenzhen after a long season which including 8 weeks of tennis in a row and a total of 91 matches played in 2019.
Belinda Bencic’ last gasp qualification run continues to the semi-finals where on Saturday she will take on Elina Svitolina for a place in Sunday’s final.
