Stefanos Tsitsipas ended his match against Daniil Medvedev by writing on the camera ‘keep loving keep fighting’ and fight he did!
Having lost all of the last five to the US Open finalist following their meeting in Shanghai recently which the Russian won 7-6 7-5, Stefanos branded his style of game as boring.
There was nothing boring about today at all.
Stefanos came out with a solid and inspired approach to the match. I love the intensity he plays with and the way he approaches every shot. I saw him live in Melbourne and Madrid this year and the way he goes about his business is faultless.
I thought he mixed it up quite nicely today and his and Stefanos’ approach to the match is something I will look at in the coming days.
Some aspects I liked were how effective he ways serving, at the net and also how he went toe to toe with Medvedev and mixed it up with good variety on the forehand.
Medvedev I thought was a little flat and played the match based on previous success. It never changed from the Russian who is usually so tactically astute this time it was very flat.
For the two debutants they did settle well into proceedings but getting that opening day win is very big for Stefanos.
Later on today see’s Rafael Nadal taking on defending champion Alex Zverev.
