Serbia win the ATP Cup!

It has been an incredible 10 days of tennis. Played across Perth, Brisbane and the final eight coming together in Sydney the new format has proved incredibly popular with fans and players alike with over 220,000 fans attending the event.

To begin the day Roberto Bautista Agut extended his winning record to 6-0 for the event with a straight sets win against Dusan Lajovic.

Another 100% record was kept as the super impressive Novak Djokovic also boasted a faultless 6-0 record in singles with his 6-2 7-6 domination of Rafael Nadal.

It meant the first ATP Cup title would come down to the doubles.

A change in nomination came from team Spain with Feliciano Lopez replacing a ‘tired’ Rafael Nadal.

Victor Troicki and Novak Djokovic would continue to be the nominated pair for team Serbia.

Having Feliciano alongside Carreno Busta looked like a smart move early on in the match with them directing a lot of the traffic towards Victor but on Novak’s serve found the break and a 3-1 lead.

Maybe a slight dip from Djokovic following his eighth match in eight days but that dip didn’t last long.

Not long after the clock struck midnight on Monday morning in Sydney the Serbian pair raised their level.

1-3 down to winning the opening set 6-3 and it got better with seven games won in a row breaking immediately for a 2-0 lead and leaving Spain looking to stop the rot.

A hold of serve for the first time in a long time stopped the run of games going the way of Troicki/Djokovic but once again they remained untroubled on serve as time ticked down.

A puff of the cheeks from Feliciano Lopez as his 40-0 game got to 40-30 but the Spanish remained a game away from Serbia but a break down!

3-2 30-15 a call out helped Serbia with Aurelie Tourte calling 40-15 but Djokovic showed great sportsmanship and offered to replay the point. A minute later Serbia are quickly down 40-40 on deciding point and a second serve returned long extended Serbia’s lead to 4-2.

Three games later and it would come down to the service game of Novak Djokovic!

It’s Novak Djokovic, it’s straight forward.

A hold to love as Djokovic leads Serbia to the inaugural ATP Cup! 6-3 6-4!
