Rain fall down at Melbourne Park may of delayed proceedings a bit but the stories still came quick and fast as the first day of the first major of 2020 got underway.
Serena Williams was not messing about as she won 6-0 6-3 against Anastasia Potapova in what was a landmark win for the American. Not only is the hunt for 24 underway but Serena’s win against Potapova was her 350th Grand Slam singles win.
Dan Evans on the other hand didn’t look like he was going to survive his first major as a seeded player.
The British number one was down 3-6 4-6 to Mackenzie McDonald from the USA but Dan rallied went onto win 18 of the next 24 games as he turned the match around to win 3-6 4-6 6-1 6-2 6-3 against the American.
Naomi Osaka was in a very happy during and after her match. Not only did she win 6-2 6-4 against Marie Bouzkova but it was the first time her dad was in her box as a Grand Slam which she posted on social media.
Naomi’s defence of her Australian Open title could not have gotten off to a better start despite breaking the net in her win…
Probably one of the biggest shocks from the day session of the first day was Denis Shapovalov’s early exit. The Canadian ended his year in good form and began in good form but Martin Fucsovics was too much for the 13th seed.
Denis played an ok game, the second serve was a bit lower than he would have liked but something that was way too high was the unforced errors. Fucsovics won 145 points and a massive 62 of them were unforced errors from Shapovalov.
Another casualty from round one was Borna Coric (unsurprisingly). The Croat’s season in all honesty started quite appallingly down at the ATP Cup and his straight sets defeat to Sam Querrey came as no surprise.
The numbers on serve were good from Borna but once again another match where he did nothing on return or created and it is becoming a big problem!
Stay tuned for more from the fallout on Day 1 at Melbourne Park!
