Caty McNally 6-1 6-4 Sam Stosur – American teenager forced to dig deep as she extends her winning run!

Caty McNally at one point was looking down the prospect of dumping out Sam Stosur 6-1 6-1 but despite a one-sided scoreline of 6-1 6-4 it was anything but straight forward for the American.

Sam Stosur as you would expect did put up a good fight against the American qualifier McNally.

The American like her good friend Coco Gauff looks fearless in their approach despite taking on some of the tours most experienced players and being so composed whilst at it.

More than anything in the match the variety and the mental strength of the 18 year old impressed me.

It kind of made me laugh at the end of the match when McNally won and you could hear a pin drop on Melbourne Arena. Some may say that is a shame but at the same time it is kind of respect for what she has just done.

4-1 in the second set against Stosur and many in the crowd probably started to pull their belongings together, get the umbrella’s out and head home however Sam dug deep. At 4-1 the sixth game of the set prolonged 9 minutes but as Sam dug deep, Caty dug deeper.

It would have been easy to rollover that game but she fought hard and even though she was pegged back to 4-4 she re-grouped and went onto win 6-4 in the seconds set.

I liked her variety, quite impressively a majority of her winners in the match came in the short part of the court constructing points well and finding her way into round two.
