Day three down at Melbourne Park was pretty much straight. The top players orchrested themselves through to the next round and others went the long way round.
Caroline Wozniacki is keeping her run going with a very comprehensive 7-5 7-5 win against the seeded Dayana Yastremska who herself had some goals for the event really wanting to face Serena again.
We are a few days but potentially if Caroline and Serena win their third round ties they would play each other in round four.
Elsewhere on the women’s draw there were wins for:
Petra Kvitova 7-5 7-5 Paula Badosa
Ash Barty 6-1 6-4 Polona Hercog
Naomi Osaka 6-2 6-4 Saisai Zheng
and many others including Carla Suarez Navarro who is on her farewell year on the tour. The Spaniard caused an upset against the rising Belarusian, Aryna Sabalenka winning 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (8-6).
On the mens side of the draw the favourite for the event Novak Djokovic came through pretty unscathed. 6-1 6-4 6-2 win against Tatsuma Ito. Fellow Serb Dusan Lajovic also booked his place into round three as did Stefanos Tsitsipas without having to step on court following Philip Kohlschreiber’s withdrawal.
Some had to go the long way around though and some didn’t make it out…
Grigor Dimitrov fought from two sets down against Tommy Paul to force a fifth but lost in the tiebreak with the American winning 6-4 7-6 3-6 6-7 7-6 (10-3) against the Bulgarian.
Julia Georges and Coco Gauff were on a similar comeback trail in their second round matches. Both dropped the first set 4-6, won the second 6-3 and won the third 7-5. Coco was 0-3 down in the third.
Julia Georges 4-6 6-3 7-5 Petra Martic
Coco Gauff 4-6 6-3 7-5 Sorana Cirstea
Matteo Berrettini came from two sets down but to only lose 5-7 in the third set against Tennys Sandgren with the American winning 7-6 6-4 4-6 2-6 7-5.
Marin Cilic who is unseeded pulled off a much needed win from two sets to one down. Benoit Paire lead but the former US Open finalist came through to win 6-2 6-7 3-6 6-1 7-6 against the Frenchman.
There was also a win the final seed Milos Raonic who has some big points to defend and looked very impressive as he took a 6-3 6-4 6-2 win against Cristian Garin.
A big win also for Heather Watson. On a couple of days which has seen a lot of home hopefuls go home we have seen Heather Watson finally get on court and from a set down won against Kristyna Pliskova.
