At the US Open last year one of the stories of the year was the exchange at the end of the match between Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka.
The American teenager was upset and visibily not happy during the match with her level with Naomi who was the defending champion going about her business as usual as she won 6-3 6-0 at Flushing Meadows.
It was a lovely moment for tennis to see Naomi go over and console the teenager at the end of the match and have a chat before inviting her to do the post match interview with her on court.
Once again they meet Naomi is a defending champion at Melbourne Park this time around. The former world number one has been in very good form over the course of the last few months winning an impressive 16 of her last 18 matches and with Wim Fissette alongside her dad in her box the 22 year old looks so focused right now.
For Coco you get the feeling this is about one thing and that is winning.
Coco has spoken about how nerves played a big part last time and that she needs to match her in the power she produces off the crowd strokes but I think she needs to bring her in as well.
It will be a fascinating battle between the two. There does seem to be a lot of pressure coming through from the American’s camp to win this one and every match.
Making the third round in Melbourne also makes Coco Gauff the first American in 30 years to have made the third round of their first three Grand Slam appearances.
It will be interesting on Friday to see how things pan out. I do expect Naomi to come through, she has been in very good form and is soo much more experienced. Some will throw the fact that Coco has beaten Venus but playing with freedom and experience at the top of women’s tennis is much different.
