Day four down at Melbourne Park did take a little while to get going. Rain delayed play on the outside courts for about an hour but once play did begin it was a business like day from the best on show.
Play began with no delay out on Rod Laver Arena, I stayed up for the majority of Garbine Muguruza’s match against Ajla Tomljanovic. It was a little bit of a messy start but I liked the way the Spaniard worked her way into the match. She took the ball early and found majority of her success when she stepped in. 6-3 3-6 6-3 victory secured her place in the third round once again.
Muguruza wasn’t the only player to take the long route on Thursday but Dominic Thiem also got himself in a spot of bother. The Austrian found himself down two sets to one against Alex Bolt but winning 12 of the final 15 games secured a 6-2 5-7 6-7 6-2 6-1 victory over the Australian.
Other results from the day included:
Karolina Pliskova 6-3 6-3 Laura Siegemund
Alex Zverev 7-6 6-4 7-5 Egor Gerasimov
Belinda Bencic 7-5 7-5 Jelena Ostapenko
Daniil Medvedev 7-5 6-1 6-3 Pedro Martinez
Angie Kerber 6-3 6-2 Priscilla Hon
Later on in the day saw Simona Halep step onto court in the first night match on the Rod Laver Arena. She stepped on and quickly stepped off winning 6-2 6-4 against Harriet Dart. The Brit gave a very good account of herself but Simona Halep was in the groove today;
There were some more notable stand out wins as home favourite Alexei Popyrin came through in three sets against Munar as well as a very good win for CiCi Bellis who has had a torrid time with injury but is now in round three following a straight sets win against Karolina Muchova.
