Simona Halep is at it again.
A comprehensive straight sets win against Jennifer Brady despite some stubbornness from the American resulted in a perfect start for the Romanian who once again turned on the burners to see off Britain’s Harriet Dart.
Harriet is the last Brit standing having been the last to qualify having been the only player to have come through qualifying.
As I said the other day, Simona Halep just looks in the groove right now.
There was a moment towards the end of the match where at 5-2 there was a slight wobble but credit to Harriet Dart for digging in. If you compare to twelve months ago when Dart lost 0-6 0-6 to Sharapova in round one you would have to tick the box and say progress has been made.
When Simona Halep is in this mood it is a good and scary watch. I think at times these moments in the match where the former finalist gets rilled is good for her as the tournament progresses as it ignites that fight a little more.
Halep didn’t hit winner after winner but constructed her points well finding the deep corners of the court off the forehand and the backhand sliding down the line.
6-2 6-4 is still quite routine but that test late on is a fantastic experience for Harriet Dart who can leave happy with her efforts in Melbourne but also more confidence for Halep.
