The fourth round is now set! The last 48 hours have been filled with dramatic matches and moments at Melbourne Park. Roger Federer almost found himself packing his bags before an inspired final couple of minutes against John Millman but we did lose Serena Williams in the process as well.
Day six saw plenty more drama and upsets…
Andrey Rublev extended his winning run to 11 matches with a strong four set win over David Goffin. The Russian is definitely one to watch out for.
From one Russian to another, Daniil Medvedev has pretty much sailed through the first week at Melbourne Park and outside Djokovic and Nadal he is playing the best tennis out there. His third round opponent was Australian Alexei Popyrin who was outplayed but a very good tournament from the young Aussie!
The final Russia in the mens draw was Karen Khachanov. I didn’t expect much from him in Melbourne but he can walk away with his head held high. He hasn’t been playing with confidence but I really liked what I saw from him in Melbourne and he deserves a lot of credit but the Saturday night headlines were Nick’s…
On the women’s side of the draw we had some big shocks and big wins.
Anett Kontaveit who we know can really hit a ball so cleanly brushed off Belinda Bencic 6-0 6-1 early in the day.
Another straight forward resulted came from the performance of Garbine Muguruza who won 6-1 6-2 against Elina Svitolina.
Kiki Bertens, Angie Kerber, Simona Halep and Elise Mertens came through their respective matches.
Donna Vekic fell to the teenager Iga Swiatek from Poland and the person some had in pole position, Karolina Pliskova fell 6-7 6-7 the experienced Russia Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
