There wasn’t fireworks but it was a fun match between Rafa and Nick!
Rafa was rampant out of the blocks but there was a bit of a slow down from the world number one who invested an awful lot in the opening set as Nick began to take charge.
The third set did feel like a deciding set and the tension was quite incredible.
Nadal serving at 5-3 lost serve.
5-5, Nick was serving for a set point and double faulted.
6-5, Nadal had a set point and double faulted.
Nadal won the tiebreak and began to run away with the start of the fourth set with an immediate break of serve.
5-4 Nadal serving for the match and Nick Kyrgios brings a show of power to stun Rod Laver Arena!
Once again and for the sixth time in three meetings a tiebreak was needed.
Any test on Monday thrown at Rafael Nadal by Nick Kyrgios he answered with some of the most incredible tennis from the tournament so far!
That game at 5-4 the Spaniard described as ‘scary’ in the fourth set but was happy to come through and play some of his best tennis at the end in the tie-break.
It was a fantastic match and Nick played a massive part in Melbourne and throughout Australia during a difficult time for the country.
After the match, Nadal had some words about Nick which were lovely despite the two not always seeing eye to eye:
“When he’s playing today with this positive attitude, he gives a lot of positive things to our sport. So I encourage him to keep working like this as he is one of the highest talents that we have on our tour and I like the Nick Kyrgios we have had at this tournament”
