For weeks on end the IOC (International Olympic Committee) have dragged their feet.
Despite almost two weeks ago an announcement from WHO (World Health Organisation) declared Covid-19 as a global pandemic the IOC and Tokyo President were all adamant the games would go ahead.
IOC president Thomas Bach recently said:
“Because we’re in contact with all these leading experts, the WHO is a member of the joint task force, & based on this info we’re fully committed to success of the Games.”
“Neither the word cancellation nor the word postponement were mentioned today.”
More recently (14th of March) the president of Tokyo, Shinzo Abe said:
“We will overcome the spread of the infection and host the Olympics without problem, as planned,”
Yesterday the president has said:
“Postponement could be inevitable”
IOC Committee member Dick Pound has said on Monday:
“On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided,”
“The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the Games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know.”
In the last week the following announcements have come from committees of countries:
~ Canada refuse to send a team for 2020 Olympics
~ Australia have told players to prepare for 2021
~ Great Britain are exploring the option of not going if 2020 goes ahead
~ Seb Coe sends letter to IOC saying 2020 Olmypics are no feasible.
Since then the IOC have said they have given themselves four weeks to decide on the games.
The message from IOC committee member Dick Pound is just two days after the four week announcement.
It looks very clear the games will be postponed but is yet to be officially confirmed by IOC president Thomas Bach…
The question is, why are we getting constant mixed messages? Why are the IOC continuing to drag their feet? It’s not hope, its absolutely delusion if they even think the games will go ahead.
