Serena and Venus individual greatness is unmatched since the turn of the century, the achievements and their legacy in the sport is quite incredible as is their doubles record together.
It’s part of their careers which doesn’t get spoken about but is truly remarkable having played 14 Grand Slam finals together and won all 14.
The first doubles title came on February 23rd in 1998 at Oklahoma City. Venus and Serena played this event as part of it’s prize was a ‘supermarket sweep’. It was called IGA SuperThrift Tennis Classic and Venus and Serena in 1998 won 7-5 6-2 in the final and went onto do their sweep for a food bank.
In a chat with Naomi Campbell on her YouTube channel Venus and Serena said:
First doubles title
VW – OMG, when was that 1998?
SW – Oklahoma right?
VW – Oklahoma City, so we played this tournament because you get to play this game as the sponsor was a supermarket. You put as much as you can in the basket like playing supermarket sweep.
VW – so we played because we wanted to do that we loved the gameshow. Everything that went in went to a food bank so we put in diapers and canned food. That’s why we played and we ended up winning singles and doubles.
VW – February, so over 22 years ago.

During their careers they have won 22 of their 23 doubles finals only ever having lost in San Diego to Lindsay Davenport and Corina Morariu.
As you can see, the number are pretty emphatic!
3 x Olympic Gold
4 x Australian Open
2 x French Open
6 x Wimbledon
2 x US Open
15 wins & 1 defeat at the Olympics
125 wins & 14 defeats in Grand Slams
It’s simply incredible, the first Grand Slam came in May 1999 at Roland Garros and the latest at Wimbledon in 2016. No matter the time difference between the wins the domination has always been there! From Wimbledon 2009 and French Open 2010 the two were unbeaten winning all four Grand Slam titles consecutively!
An incredible number to take from their longevity and remarkable achievements is Venus and Serena have the same amount of Grand Slam doubles defeats (14) as they do titles.
The success is unmatched in women’s doubles and men’s doubles. To win time and time again and to have done what they do at the highest level of women’s tennis for decades and to produce this level in an era where the calendars are soo crammed now is unthinkable.
The attitude is win and it’s simple.
These two are unmatched and phenomenal.
