Three weeks of tournaments have been completed. The work done by tournaments to stage these events in the safest way possible for players has been absolutely exceptional but what have been the main stories from the last few weeks and ahead of the New York double.
Jennifer wins her first title!
The question for players in good form early on in 2020 was can they continue it when tennis resumed?
Jennifer Brady defeated Sharapova, Svitolina, Barty and Muguruza in the early weeks and was in fine form in Kentucky last week as she bulldozed her way through the field to win her first WTA title on home soil against Jill Tiechmann and should be one to watch out for in New York where she will be seeded.
Simona Halep wins back to back titles!
Simona Halep winning back to back titles isn’t a major shock but 177 days apart after a global pandemic the Romanian is in fine form right now.
Following her strong week in Dubai I was surprised but pleased by her level in Prague. It was a steady start to the week and got herself out of danger but once she got to the final four she was a woman on a mission.
The level of tennis after almost six months without competition was exceptional!
Who impressed in Kentucky and who didn’t?
It was a big week of tennis in Kentucky, Tiechman and Jennifer Brady impressed but so did many others.
To see CiCi Bellis back and playing well was good after a torrid time with injury and surgery last year. Coco Gauff impressed in her comeback win against the tricky Ons Jabeur. Qualifier Leylah Fernandez showed good form once again with back to back main draw wins over Sloane Stephens who left with plenty to think about.
Sloane has some big work to do and will be hoping to find some big form in Cincinnati and US Open where she has had a lot of success but needs to change it up. You can read more on this below…
Serena and Venus also showed good signs throughout their stay but will be hoping to build some more momentum before the US Open and get used to that match rhythm again.
Someone who isn’t used to match rhythm and needs it is Victoria Azarenka. I don’t think she needs to panic but there is work to do. I think it is right of Vika to be playing Cincinnati doubles too to find some much needed rhythm.
ATP to refund over £20 million worth of tickets
The ATP have announced they will be refunding fans for the ATP Finals. Over 240,000 fans attended last year and refunds will mount to over £20 million due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.
The decision has been made due to the current guidelines by the UK government on indoor crowds, if this changes and improves tickets will be re-sold in a socially distanced manner.
US Open withdrawals latest
US Open edges closer and the withdrawals list grows.
6 of the WTA top 10 are out and including Simona Halep now. Kei Nishikori is a major doubt having tested positive for Covid-19 in Florida and has opted out of Cincinnati due to this positive test.
Novak Djokovic has confirmed his place and has been on site practicing the last few days.
Defending champions Rafael Nadal and Bianca Andreescu are also out.
