It has been a week of fascinating tennis so far at Flushing Meadows and the upcoming stars on the ATP and WTA tour have really impressed at the US Open.
Three winners on Friday included Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Caty McNally and Iga Swiatek advancing to the second week. One player who didn’t win on Friday but was really impressive too was Marta Kostyuk who fell to Naomi Osaka.
Despite 2020 being a shorter year than expected on the tour the teenager who turned 19 in May has had an impressive run of results making the fourth round in Melbourne and now into the third round at Flushing Meadows.
Iga plays such a strong game, she moves around the court effortlessly at times and has excellent anticipation and constructs lovely points in her wins against Kudermertova and Vickery so far.
Next up will be a big test for Iga in Victoria Azarenka who since coming to New York has looked in fine form and was absolutely outstanding against Sabalenka in round two.
Caty is another teenager who is impressing on the tour. Last year at the age of 17 she gave Serena a run for her money forcing her to three sets and has picked up from where she left off.
Caty will turn 19 later in the year but her game is soo mature, it’s like watching a player who has been playing for many years at this level. I was interested to see how Caty got on against Alexandrova and fought incredibly hard from a set down to win.
Next up for the American will be a tricky 16th seed in Elise Mertens who many have as someone who could go far in the tournament.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
Alejandro made a name for himself in Estoril and has been the biggest surprise at the US Open this year.
The Spaniard plays such an explosive game from the baseline and has orchestrated his way to the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. Prior to his debut at Flushing Meadows this year he won just one match at a major in Melbourne in January and is now won three on the bounce.
It’s been a great week for Alejandro who beat three in-form players in Dennis Novak over five sets, Herbert Hurkacz in four and Great Britain’s Cam Norrie.
Marta only turned 18 a couple of months ago but the Ukrainian teenager was really impressive in her three matches at Flushing Meadows.
She breezed past Kasatkina, fought well against Sevastova and was close to a potential upset against Naomi Osaka with four major break points in the third set but failed to capitalise.
Despite going out in the third it was a very good tournament for Kostyuk, a lot impressed me about her game but it was the injection of power especially behind the forehand which made her a threat. As Naomi said, she is a bit scared at how good she’s going to be in the future!
