For a few hours on Sunday night the friendship of Dominic Thiem and Sascha Zverev will be put to one side.
Dominic Thiem more than Sascha Zverev has been knocking on the door for quite some time and now the breakthrough will happen for someone. This is Dominic Thiem’s fourth Grand Slam final having been runner-up in Paris on two occasions, Melbourne this year and now another shot at in New York.
Sascha Zverev is consistently inconsistent in his performances but his results at majors have been much better. Back to back semi-finals at a major and a first Grand Slam final now for the German who has struggled en-route to his maiden final.
With all respect to Alex Zverev and his opponents in the last couple of rounds (Borna Coric and Pablo Carreno Busta) I don’t think better players would have let him off the hook as much but I do believe in the saying you can only play who is in-front of you.
Dominic Thiem leads their head to head at 7-2, their last match was the semi-final in Melbourne which Thiem won in four. I do think right now he is playing his best tennis outside of Roland Garros.
The way he has gone through his matches especially against Auger-Aliassime, De Minaur and Medvedev to get to the final have been tactically brilliant, I can’t fault him.
Zverev hasn’t recorded a win over Thiem since 2018 Madrid Open final but hasn’t done it on a hard court for almost four years.
These two are good friends but in my opinion when it comes down to their level right now Thiem is miles ahead.
Will it be Thiem’s time or will Sascha surprise us?
