Iga Swiatek stuns Simona Halep at Roland Garros!

Simona Halep was mine and many peoples favourite to go onto lift her second Roland Garros title next weekend but as we have found out over the course of the week, expect the unexpected.

Following the exit of Garbine Muguruza late on Saturday night another former champion in Simona Halep has also packed her bags early losing to Iga Swiatek.

It isn’t often that you see players pull Simona Halep apart on a clay court but the teenager from Poland was relentlessly brilliant. It turned into a surprise when the 19 year old did miss a shot and hit an astonishing 17 winners to Halep’s 4 in a 6-1 set as she bulldozed her way past the top seed.

Swiatek opened up the court perfectly with her forehand to have Halep on the run on these courts takes some doing, the power, pace and accuracy was near on perfect 99% of the time and it meant the former champion had to try and play the perfect game.

There was a lot to shout about from Swiatek’s game but in a match lasting just over an hour in the second set Halep on serve it was what she did on the Romanian’s service games which was utterly impressive. There was never a free game for Halep, the top seed was forced to work extremely hard for points and struggled to see out games following the relentless pressure.

Last year Roland Garros the teenager was given a bit of a tennis lesson in 45 minutes losing 0-6 1-6 to Simona Halep but how the tables had turned with Swiatek dishing out a 6-1 6-2 victory over the top seed who has some thinking to do ahead of 2021.
