Serena Williams has begun her season the way she would have wanted and the way sister Venus did on Sunday morning with a win.
The former world number one battled hard in a close opening couple of games but after picking up a game a piece the American really got into her groove accelerating to unassailable lead and taking the first set 6-1.
It was a perfect start to the day watching from the UK, Serena was moving really well and striking the backhand in particular cleanly which sometimes can take some time to get going.
Serena’s level and dominance off all wings did mean Gavrilova who had a good win in round one had to dip deep to keep in line with the 5th seed in the second set. Daria was definitely more settled and did find her forehand very well.
The early break in the second set left the Aussie with a small mountain to climb but kept in touch with Serena Williams during a closer second set.
Serena continued to impress on serve and didn’t look back sealing a 6-1 6-4 win over a returning Daria Gavrilova who grew into the match but the barrage of winners from the former world number one proved too much!
