In the early hours of Tuesday morning Dan Evans will be up against fellow Brit Cam Norrie as the only male Brits in the Australian Open singles will battle for a place in round two but Dan who is seeded at 30th in the first major of the year has begun his year in fantastic style.
Five straight sets wins including a double on Friday and a win over third seed Felix Auger Aliassime in the early hours of Sunday morning propelled the British number one to his first ATP title.
Between Dan and Felix at the ATP 250 Murray River Open it was a question of who would win their first career title going into the Australian Open.
Dan who already seen off Jeremy Chardy and Borna Coric in the previous rounds took a few games to find an opportunity which pretty much turned the set for on its head for Felix.
Level at 2-2 and with the Canadian 40-15 up, Dan wasn’t done there winning three points in a row to break for the first time for a 3-2 lead and reeled off three more games in a row barely dropping a point to seal the opening set 6-2.
Once again it was an early break for Dan t 1-1 in the match to nudge ahead of the 3rd seed, Felix kept it tight but the writing on the wall when he was broken and trailed 2-5. He did get back into the set with his first break of the match but it was returned by Dan on the second time of asking winning 6-2 6-3 in 75 minutes.
A first ATP title for Dan a couple of days before his meeting with Cam Norrie and in the same section of as Rafael Nadal.
