Novak Djokovic wins his 9th Australian Open title

The question was, which unbeaten run would come to an end?

Novak Djokovic on an phenonemal 20 match unbeaten run at the Australian Open and an equally impressive run of 20 consecutive wins for Daniil Medvedev, 12 of those being against top 10 players including Novak Djokovic.

The world number one has never lost a semi-final or a final at Melbourne Park and it felt like if anyone was going to do it based on the last few weeks it would be Daniil Medvedev.

The first set was pretty normal on serve for both players after a shaky start. Djokovic broke the Russian immediately and took a 3-0 lead, in true style however the grit of Daniil pulled his way back into the set. He had that issue of serving from behind and in the pressure moment a backhand off the net cord set things up nicely for Djokovic.

Medvedev had the net covered but the Serb on the hunt for his ninth title in Melbourne was passed following a stunning backhand down the line and despite saving two set points the world number one converted his third.

It did look like Medvedev re-grouped well in the opening moments of the second set breaking Djokovic’ serve but it turned into a bit of a runaway for Djokovic who put on the accelerator and raced to a 4-1 lead. Medvedev did stop a small rot but Djokovic did win 6 of the last 7 games in a second set to run to a two set lead.

The wheels came off for Medvedev, nothing he could try was upsetting the rhythm of the world number one and likewise he couldn’t settle into his rhythm at all. The deep hitting from Novak and the intensity was out of this world as he raced to a 9th Australian Open title, 21st consecutive Australian Open win and 18th Grand Slam title closing the gap on Federer and Nadal.
