Paris, London & Melbourne, Daniil Medvedev’s 20 match unbeaten run comes to an end but it’s just the beginning for the Russian!

All good runs must come to an end. Daniil Medvedev’s from Paris Masters through the ATP Finals, beginning his season at the ATP Cup and finishing as runner-up at the Australian Open has been nothing short of exceptional.

In tennis there have been greater unbeaten runs, in recent times we have had Djokovic’ 43, Federer’s 41, Nadal’s 32 and Murray’s 26 but this was up there.

During this time the Russian won the Paris Masters and was an unbeaten winner at the ATP Finals. He began 2021 leading Russia at the ATP Cup going unbeaten once more and put together six wins in a row at the Australian Open before being denied his 21st consecutive win by Novak Djokovic who took him to town in the Australian Open final.

The most impressive thing about this run is that it was top ten heavy. In any unbeaten run you will meet top players however to have played twelve and beaten twelve during this unbeaten run is quite phenomenal and the list is sensational.

6-6 vs Anderson
5-7 6-2 6-2 vs De Minaur
6-3 6-1 vs Schwartzman
6-4 7-6 vs Raonic
5-7 6-4 6-1 vs Zverev (Paris Masters Final)
6-3 6-4 vs Zverev
6-3 6-3 vs Djokovic
6-3 6-3 vs Schwartzman
3-6 7-6 6-3 vs Nadal
4-6 7-6 6-4 vs Thiem (ATP Finals Final)
7-5 6-3 vs Schwartzman
6-2 6-4 vs Kei Nishikori
3-6 6-3 7-5 vs Zverev
6-4 6-2 vs Berrettini
6-2 6-2 6-4 vs Pospisil
6-2 7-5 6-1 vs Carballes Baena
6-3 6-3 4-6 3-6 6-0 vs Krajinovic
6-4 6-2 6-3 vs McDonald
7-5 6-3 6-2 vs Rublev
6-4 6-2 7-5 vs Tsitsipas (Australian Open Semi-Final)

It was a quite incredible run, he beat the top two as well as Thiem and Zverev. There are many other top ten wins in there and also wins against former top ten players in Anderson, Raonic and Nishikori.

A phenomenal run but also the way he came from a set down to Zverev in Paris, Thiem and Nadal in London and Zverev again in Melbourne fantastic.

He plays with such confidence in his game and composure. His ground strokes are pretty unusual but I find it brilliant and fascinating to watch. Daniil does make himself work a lot but has exceptional trust in his game and this run is just the beginning.

Daniil has 3 Masters 1000 titles to his name, two Grand Slam finals a plenty of big game experience to call upon, this run may have come to an end but his time will come!
