Nick Kyrgios has always divided opinion. I’ve always loved watching Nick play tennis. I find him imaginative and flawlessly brilliant. Not only has Nick showed up for his country in ATP Cup but he has used his voice to help those in crisis following the bush fires across Australia and deserves credit. Nick himself has said it isn’t about him and this is the side to Nick that doesn’t get spoken about enough. People make him out to be the bad boy of tennis but his heart is in the right place. Away from this, Nick has his own foundation … Continue reading Nick Kyrgios delivered, for his country and for his team
It has been an incredible 10 days of tennis. Played across Perth, Brisbane and the final eight coming together in Sydney the new format has proved incredibly popular with fans and players alike with over 220,000 fans attending the event. To begin the day Roberto Bautista Agut extended his winning record to 6-0 for the event with a straight sets win against Dusan Lajovic. Another 100% record was kept as the super impressive Novak Djokovic also boasted a faultless 6-0 record in singles with his 6-2 7-6 domination of Rafael Nadal. It meant the first ATP Cup title would come … Continue reading Serbia win the ATP Cup!
When the pressure is on, when it is win or bust there is only one man to call. Novak Djokovic’ perfect performance against Rafael Nadal in ATP Cup will go down as one of the matches of the year. His relentless fight is unmatched and has taken his record to a quite outstanding 8 matches and 19 sets of tennis won in a row against Rafael Nadal on a hard court. The performance oozed class from Djokovic. I’ve seen a lot of Djokovic over the years where I have sat there and said “too good” but this was another level … Continue reading Djokovic Delivers; would you have expected anything else?
Roberto Bautista Agut is Mr Reliable. There seems to be something about the month of January that brings out the very best in the Spaniard. Four of his last seven titles on the tour have some in the month of January and last year made the quarter finals in Melbourne for the first time. What you see is what you get from Roberto Bautista Agut. Clever, hard working and as I said reliable. It’s been quite the journey over the last year or so. The Spaniard ended up missing his bachelor party due to his run at Wimbledon but his … Continue reading Reliable Roberto unbeaten at ATP Cup as he begins his season in perfect fashion!
It was about two years I watched Alex De Minaur for the first time. Brisbane against Milos Raonic and I knew from the first couple of minutes, this guy has game. I’ve said this before but the shout of “OH YEAH” on the service return winner he hit is one of those things you just don’t forget. Over the last two years he has gone from strength to strength. 24 hours after landing in Melbourne in January last year I booked a night session ticket for Rod Laver Arena. I was battling awfully bad jet lag but saved my sleep … Continue reading The relentless runner chasing down dreams with his jaw-dropping tennis!
124 players were nominated to represent their country over the course of the inaugural ATP Cup in Perth, Brisbane and Sydney. It is a team game after all but bare from the usual suspects, which individuals stood out? Casper Ruud – Norway Casper has been one of my favourite players to watch come up through the rankings over the last 12 months or so. Even I was surprised by his start to the season but he really took the game to his opponents. His main weapon is his forehand and he was so strong in his wins against Fognini and … Continue reading ATP Cup is a team game but which individuals stood out?
For two sets of tennis Alex De Minaur was the better player. The 20 yearly was simply relentless in his shot making as he continued to press the world number one. All the traffic was coming off the racket of the Australian who gave Rafa nothing to work with. It was a very good performance in defeat. He hit a lot of flat balls towards Rafa and kept traffic away from his forehand in the opening couple of sets. Alex’ tactics were really good but there was a couple of problems. Rafa began to hit cleanly off the backhand find … Continue reading Rafael Nadal turns it on late to see off a relentless Alex de Minaur!
