A mesmerising week of tennis in Dubai

A week in Dubai which left us mesmerised. The tennis was spectacular, if you ever needed an advert for women’s tennis then look no further. I cannot pick a moment because there were so many. The performances and the title win of Belinda Bencic was out of this world, what she achieved was truly magnificent to defeat Halep, Sabalenka, Svitolina and Kvitova in the manner she did to win the title was superb. What about Eli Svitolina? I was as well impressed with her in Dubai this week, she looked like she was a bit more locked into the battle … Continue reading A mesmerising week of tennis in Dubai

Belinda is back in the big time!

Almost four years ago Belinda Bencic made waves in Toronto as the Swiss star saw off Wozniacki, Ivanovic Serena and Halep on route to a big in at the Rogers Cup. Since then it has been tough for her, injuries have halted the progression of her career but over the last 6 months or so Belinda has definitely been on the right track. Linking up with Roger Federer to win Hopman Cup for the second year on the trot is of course headline making news but the work she has done on the training court and challenger tour is paying … Continue reading Belinda is back in the big time!

Naomi Osaka had been working with Sascha Bajin for quite some time and in that period she won Indian Wells, US Open and the Australian Open as well as becoming the world number one. Last week it was announced that they had split and Naomi is now set to play in her first tournament since her win and has been speaking openly about the split. Elina Svitolina has firmly put her name in winners circle for Indian Wells and Miami with her title defence in Dubai. Elina didn’t drop a set against Osaka, Kerber and Kasatkina on her way to her winning her 11th career. All week the Ukrainian number one has been in fine form and has looked comfortable and in the zone. So far this year she already has two Premier titles to her name in Brisbane and now Dubai securing more Top 10 wins and looks set for another strong year on the tour. The next few weeks will be interesting as … Continue reading Title defended! Svitolina wins Dubai again!

Rethink required! Dubai scheduling has been very poorly planned!

The latest Premier tournament on the WTA tour arrived in Dubai on Monday and it’s fair to say the planning and scheduling has been far from premier! On Wednesday as with every other day this week in Dubai plays doesn’t begin until 2pm local time which is unusual for any event on the tour usually beginning at around 11am local time. There is nothing wrong with beginning play at 2pm but when you are squeezing five matches on the one court it will be a long day which is unfair for players. Garbine Muguruza and Cici Billis were due second … Continue reading Rethink required! Dubai scheduling has been very poorly planned!

Week 1 Winners! – Svitolina, Kyrgios & Halep amongst title holders

The season is now underway on the WTA and ATP tours with the first finals of the year now gone seeing title wins for Elina Svitolina and Nick Kyrgios in Brisbane and Simona Halep in Dubai. The week also saw some surprise victories on the tour as Wozniacki was defeated by Georges in Auckland and Cilic was seen off by Simon and Monfils also walked away from the first week of 2018 with a title. Titles for Elina, Simona and Nick do no harm at all going into Melbourne in a week’s time to pick up momentum going into the … Continue reading Week 1 Winners! – Svitolina, Kyrgios & Halep amongst title holders

2 titles, 17 wins and 2 defeats.. Elina Svitolina is on route to the top!

As of Monday morning Elina Svitolina will be a debutant in the top 10. I’ve said in the past the Ukranian sometimes has gone under the radar but 17 wins from 19 matches including wins against Kerber (x2), Puig and Wozniacki amongst others with two titles to her name and her first Premier title this week in Dubai. I’ve said before her all round game is good and there isn’t really a standout weakness and it is all coming together at the right time now the only issue may be that consistency during matches. I spoke about how well she … Continue reading 2 titles, 17 wins and 2 defeats.. Elina Svitolina is on route to the top!
