Victoria Azarenka and Ash Barty have been one of the form teams on the doubles tour this year. They have a win/loss of 21/8 for the season as a team over a course of playing in eight tournaments and winning a title in Rome at the same time as well as a semifinal run in Miami and a runner up spot at the US Open. During this added doubles schedule both have been active on the singles tour as well and Ash has also of course won Miami, Roland Garros and made it to world number one in this time … Continue reading No more party! Doubles is over for Vika & Ash for 2019 but will they be back in 2020?
It has been an incredible couple of days down in New York. With round one now over who has caught the eye down at Flushing Meadows? Vasek Pospisil 4-6 7-5 7-5 4-6 6-3 Karen Khachanov Vasek has his first main draw win in a year following a rough time with injury. Karen Khachanov will be gutted to go home so early in a major following a good run of performances but he didn’t get going. Karen played ok but that was it. I never saw him take the initiative and try and go for it against the Canadian, instead he … Continue reading Who stole the headlines at the opening round matches at US Open?
Round one at Flushing Meadows has some incredible line-ups but the attention will be on one meeting in-particular… Serena Williams v Maria Sharapova A rivalry continued. Since 2004 there have been 21 meetings. 22 if you count the walk-over at Roland Garros last year with Serena’s withdrawal. The head to head was once led by Maria at 2-1 but 18 wins in a row leaves Serena with a 19-2 record against the Russian. The tour domination these two are use to is no more. Both are in a state of finding their best. Serena has found a very good level … Continue reading All eyes on 👀
It was a match that we expected a lot from. The opening two games of the match took 8 minutes to complete. Former world number one’s up against each other looking for a place on middle Monday at Wimbledon. It was Vika who got ahead at 3-1 with some powerful hitting but then it fell apart for the Belarusian which is a big shame. 3-1 up to losing the set 3-6. Simona Halep did what she had to do. I said in my preview I have been impressed with the way she has conducted herself and the level of tennis … Continue reading 6-3 6-1; Halep in control as Vika falters despite a good start!
Unseeded former world number one Victoria Azarenka will take on number seventh seed Simona Halep I’ve enjoyed watching both ladies in their respective first two matches. Halep has shown that big mental fight in both her matches and played to such a high level in her third set against Buzarnescu. Vika goes under the radar but should be given more of a platform to shine because her tennis in her opening round match and especially against Tomljanovic was lights out. It was soo good! It is a shame that someone has to go home this early, who will and who … Continue reading Simona Halep v Victoria Azarenka; which former No.1 is on course for round four?
First two games from Victoria Azarenka were messy. The following twelve? It was beautiful. The tennis Victoria Azarenka played was unstoppable first thing this morning taking just over an hour to see off Alja Tomljanovic from Australia 6-2 6-0. Before the match a lot of talk was about Vika’s serve and it’s no secret it hasn’t really stood up at big moments. 6 of her 12 defeats coming into Wimbledon this year have been third set defeats and in five of them which include her last three defeats she has been a set up but her serve just hasn’t been … Continue reading Vintage Vika reels off 12 games in a row as she cruises to the third round!
If round one was tough then round two would be a bigger challenge for world number one Naomi Osaka up against Victoria Azarenka. The Belarusian who is a former world number one and double Australian Open champion was up against Naomi Osaka the current US Open & Australian Open champion and world number one but her run in Paris continues where as Azarenka’s run in singles has come to an end. Vika saw off former Roland Garros champion with a 6-4 7-6 win against Jelena Ostapenko in the first round of the tournament and played a strong game but was … Continue reading Naomi Osaka comes back from the brink again!
