Another day see’s another withdrawal from the WTA Finals. Following the withdrawals of Naomi Osaka and Bianca Andreescu it was Kiki Bertens who this time had to call her run as alternate in Shenzhen to an early end. Her match against Belinda Bencic would decide who would qualify for the semi-finals to face Elina Svitolina and it was a really good encounter. It was Bertens who got the first look in really soaking up the pressure coming from the racket of the 22 year old and at 5-4 would serve for the set. Things quickly turned around for Bencic as … Continue reading Bencic 7-5 1-0 Bertens; Kiki forced out injured as Belinda advances to semi-finals!
Everything that could have happened in Shenzhen today did happen. We woke up to the news that former world number one Naomi Osaka had withdrawn from the tournament due to a shoulder injury. She sustained the injury in the Beijing final and it flared up again in her win against Petra Kvitova. With about two hours notice and having played in Zhuhai a few days ago the first alternate Kiki Bertens was drafted in. Having narrowly missed out on qualifying the Madrid champion was not going to waste her opportunity and upset the Barty Party which has been put on … Continue reading WTA Finals Day 3; Osaka withdraws 🚑 Bertens wins on arrival 🛫 Bencic gets first win ✅ winless Kvitova could still go through 🤔 Barty Party is on hold ⚠️ Confusing Scenario’s 🤯
I’m gutted in all honesty. Kiki Bertens is in the WTA Elite Trophy as the top seed and now there is added pressure to end her season on a high. 75 matches got played between January and late September and having occupied a spot for so long where did it go wrong? Performances dipped as the season progressed. Why is that? Did the injury/illness she picked up at Roland Garros derail her season but was scheduling not great. Overall you could say a good season which it was but still it felt like it was one of underachievement topped off … Continue reading No one played more tennis than Kiki Bertens in 2019, so where did her WTA Finals bid go wrong?
It’s been a fantastic week of tennis in Beijing. This time of the year there is a lot on the line as players look to end their season on a high. Many come into early October with aspirations of making their tours final events in London and debuting in Shenzhen respectively and many will walk away very happy. Kiki Bertens Kiki has found form at the right time. It got a case of potentially save her season. This is just the third time since winning in Madrid in May that the dutch player has won four matches in a row … Continue reading Five who found some much needed form in Beijing!
The season is heading to it’s finale but as ever there is plenty of tennis and news hitting the headlines as the tour finished it’s stint in Asia heading back to Europe for now. Sharapova out of Linz! Maria Sharapova’s season is not over yet but I will be surprised if we see her again this year. The Russian was due to play in Linz next week a place she hasn’t featured for over a decade but this shoulder problem has forced her out once again. Maria is expected still on site in Linz on Tuesday at an autograph session … Continue reading Osaka, Djokovic & Thiem 🏆 Sharapova out of Linz 🤕 Shanghai 🇨🇳 Murray in action 💪🏻 Rafa’s wrist 🚑 Last chance in Linz? 🇦🇹
Serena Williams’ hiatus since New York has all but confirmed who will be playing at the WTA Finals in Shenzhen. It is understood but not confirmed that the American will not play if she does qualify. So who is in? Ash Barty, Karolina Pliskova, Simona Halep, Naomi Osaka, Petra Kvitova and Bianca Andreescu are in. Defeats for Elina Svitolina (quarter finals) and Kiki Bertens (semi-finals) have delayed what looks an inevitable spot with two positions left and Serena not to play but there is still one player who could have a say… Belinda Bencic has the joint most top ten … Continue reading WTA Finals lineup is all but set however Belinda Bencic could still join the party!
The final major of the year is a chance to end the season on a high. Of course there is still a lot of tennis to be played once all has been said and done in New York but for preparations for an event they’d hope to compete at have been anything but ideal. Who faces uncertainty going into New York? Kiki Bertens Kiki played out of this world earlier on this year but her season is in danger of petering out. She won titles in Russia and Madrid and since Madrid it has gone to plan. I saw her … Continue reading Who’s preparations for Flushing Meadows have been far from ideal?
