Having featured in eight events in 2019 Maria Sharapova is set for a busy start to 2020 if all is well. The former world number one is due to play at least three events before the Australian Open with a big rumour of a fourth as well. Maria Sharapova shuts down her injury plagued season but how should she approach 2020?

Maria Sharapova has called time on her season. As expected the former world number one followed up with her withdrawal from Linz and has withdrawn from Luxembourg ending her season with 8 wins and 7 defeats. So, where next for the Russian? It is difficult because the question is, how fit is she? Maria Sharapova hasn’t featured in a tennis match since he drubbing by Serena Williams at Flushing Meadows. With the season coming to a close the former world number has lined up her final two tournaments of the season with a little surprise. There will be no appearance in Moscow at all this year. Sharapova always go to Moscow which is a WTA Premier event with just over $1,000,000 on offer in prize money but instead is off to Luxembourg which is an international event with just $250,000 of prize money on offer. Who stole the headlines at the opening round matches at US Open?

It has been an incredible couple of days down in New York. With round one now over who has caught the eye down at Flushing Meadows? Vasek Pospisil 4-6 7-5 7-5 4-6 6-3 Karen Khachanov Vasek has his first main draw win in a year following a rough time with injury. A scoreline of 1-6 1-6 aside questions have still been left unanswered and maybe more have surfaced following her round one defeat at Flushing Meadows. To be honest I didn’t expect her to win against Serena. Was it an alarming performance? To an extent, no as we didn’t learn anything we didn’t know but concerns? Yes. The final major of the year is here. With the main draw not even underway at Flushing Meadows the stories coming out have been pretty big. Serena v Maria Where do I start?
