Since the beginning of 2018 Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from 19 tournaments. Majority of these have been on hard courts but still a high number. Rafa has had every injury possible it feels like but he never gives up. During this time he has had some tough matches as well. In 2018 he couldn’t complete his matches in Melbourne and New York due to injury and at Indian Wells earlier on in the year had to withdraw against Federer and skip Miami. Preparations going into April were not ideal. Before the clay court season I said previous high standards have … Continue reading The “Mental Genius” who played lights out tennis when it mattered the most!
For an incredible twelfth time it is Rafa’s day in Paris. A valiant effort from Dominic Thiem who has had another incredible journey at Roland Garros wasn’t enough to budge Nadal today. No one on the tour would have done better against Rafa today. These two were absolutely relentless today. It was so good especially in the first two sets and there wasn’t much to split them but a bit of a wild service game from Dominic Thiem which set Nadal in good stead to take the first. The reaction from the Austrian was what you would expect. He held … Continue reading Unmatched brilliance! Rafael Nadal wins his 12th French Open title!
Orchestrating a clay court win against Rafael Nadal is the most difficult task in tennis. No one has defeated Rafael Nadal more times on clay since the beginning of 2016 than Dominic Thiem. The Austrian has four wins against the Spaniard on this surface. However, no one has beaten Dominic Thiem more times on clay since the beginning of 2016 than Rafael Nadal who has 6 wins. Rafa is on course for a remarkable 12th title at Roland Garros and 94th win in 96 matches in Paris which is simply mad. How does Dominic Thiem do it on the biggest … Continue reading Can Dominic Thiem produce the extraordinary in Paris against Rafael Nadal?
On Sunday Rafael Nadal will bid for his 12th Roland Garros final. He has an unmatchable 97.87 win percentage at Roland Garros winning 92 of his 94 matches. A 6-3 6-4 6-2 win against Roger Federer will leave to battle for another crown in Paris. The tennis was impeccable from the Spaniard who once he got going was not going to be matched at all. They had to battle the odd rain shower without any delays and some persistent 45mph+ winds but got through safely to the final. The first six games were close with breaks of serve either way … Continue reading Wind, Rain & Roger; Rafa see’s it all off and will battle for No.12 on Sunday!
For the 39th time we have another episode of Roger Federer v Rafael Nadal. A place in the Roland Garros final is up for grabs and is their first meeting on clay in some time. Rafa leads the head to head at 23 wins to Roger’s 15 however the Swiss number one has won their last 6. Nadal hasn’t beaten Roger for five years. On clay Rafa has 13 wins in their head to head compared to Roger’s 2. I can only see one winner here. I think what Federer has done over the course of the clay court season … Continue reading Episode 39 of Fedal; surely there is only one winner?
The bottom half of the draw are set for their quarter finals as the battle for the title intensifies. On the top half of the draw we still await our last quarter finalist with Del Potro and Khachanov having to come back to finish. Stan Wawrinka (24) v Roger Federer (3) A Swiss off! Roger hasn’t had a major test yet in her first tournament here since 2015 and Wawrinka has battled like a warrior to be here. Stan has seen off Kovalik, the in-form Garin, Dimitrov and of course that five hour meeting with Tsitsipas just to be here. … Continue reading Nishikori, Wawrinka, Federer & Nadal; who will make the final four?
I like Kei Nishikori. I feel like were in a state of deja vu. How much does Kei Nishikori have left in the tank for Rafael Nadal? I found myself asking the same question in Melbourne and he then got bulldozed by Novak before retiring injured. I said yesterday he has a knack of making things difficult for himself and that’s been the theme of his match against Paire, tournament on a whole and honestly at times his season. Inconsistency has been a problem ball to ball, game to game and match to match. He hasn’t had a top 10 … Continue reading Kei survives but how much has he got left in the tank?
