Daniil Medvedev guides his backhand well but would he find more joy & authority with a ripped approach?

Daniil Medvedev’s game is unorthodox but effective and in my opinion good on the eye. Some have said his tennis isn’t attractive but how can you argue with a formula that has him with the most tour wins this year? He has a Masters 1000 title and a major final under his belt of late and I see him causing trouble and competing at the highest but is there a slight issue with his game? I wouldn’t call it an issue but a room for improvement. I think he can take his backhand to the next level. If many were … Continue reading Daniil Medvedev guides his backhand well but would he find more joy & authority with a ripped approach?

Nadal’s night in New York despite a spirited Medvedev fight!

Rafael Nadal is the US Open champion. I think I owe a slight apology as I did write off his chances right after his Rogers Cup win but as the best fell short he continued to deliver. A match that looked to be plain-sailing for the Spaniard up two sets to love and a break in the third suddenly got tricky. Daniil Medvedev pulled it out, he left it all out there throughout the fortnight and I was shocked but pleasantly surprised to see how he coped with the relentless hitting from Rafa and turned the tables on the 19 … Continue reading Nadal’s night in New York despite a spirited Medvedev fight!

US Open debutant Bianca Andreescu victorious in New York!

Number 24 is going to have to wait. A season of incredible results has delivered another memorable moment this time at Flushing Meadows. 12 months ago Bianca Andreescu was deep outside the 100 in the world and lost in the first round of qualifying at the US Open. Now, in her main draw debut she is the champion. photo credit – Getty images It was quite the performance from the Canadian who goes from strength to strength on the tour and her fearless approach is admirable. It was a US Open final which will go down as one of the … Continue reading US Open debutant Bianca Andreescu victorious in New York!

Slow courts suit Daniil Medvedev but now you’re playing to Rafael Nadal’s rampant rhythm!

The slow courts have meant Daniil Medvedev can loiter around the baseline pretty unscathed however the toughest challenge is here, the man who plays to his rhythm and his only. Rafael Nadal. If I were to describe how both play but song, Medvedev would be Heroes by David Bowie (slow but effective) and Nadal’s would be Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting by Elton John (steady then rampant). I don’t think you’ll read a more bizarre sentence than that previewing a Grand Slam final ┬ábut hey, what better way to kick off? I do worry for Daniil Medvedev in this one, … Continue reading Slow courts suit Daniil Medvedev but now you’re playing to Rafael Nadal’s rampant rhythm!

At 23, Matteo Berrettini’s journey has been totally different but is reaping the rewards of biding his time!

By the age of 23 many players on the tour have been knocking around for a good six years with a few hundred matches under their belt. It does have it’s benefits, we have seen soo many players win big early in their careers but we have seen the struggles and the hard fight on young shoulders to come through tough times. I always believe the saying ‘too much too soon’ in tennis and some are victim to that but Matteo was brought up differently. From a young age he was coached by former top 100 player Vincenzo Santopadre and … Continue reading At 23, Matteo Berrettini’s journey has been totally different but is reaping the rewards of biding his time!

Win or Lose, Serena is set to shutdown her season after New York!

There has been no confirmation but the noise is that no matter what happens in the US Open final against Bianca Andreescu it will be the end of Serena Williams’ season. The former world number one is set to shut down her season early once again. Obviously she didn’t play after New York in 2017 as she was on Maternity leave. In 2018 after that US Open final she decided to close her year down and in 2016 and 2015 pulled out injured. The last time she played post New York was in 2014. Serena played in Wuhan but lost … Continue reading Win or Lose, Serena is set to shutdown her season after New York!

History is on the line. On Saturday evening we will be treated to an incredible battle out on Arthur Ashe stadium.
