Grass court shake up for 2020 leaves British events in trouble!

As expected there will be a big shake up on the grass court schedule for 2020. It was rumoured a while back that the WTA Premier event down in Birmingham was at risk of being downgraded and in 2020 it will go down to a WTA International meaning prize money will drop from about $1 million to $250,000. Part of this will see the event look at cutting the losses but will have to potentially leave themselves with less top players. WTA Birmingham set to be downgraded; points and prize money to fall with Wimbledon set to support a new event in Germany

WTA Birmingham is being downgraded. The what was a Premier Event will now be an international event. This change could happen as soon as next year if not 2021 for sure. This year we saw world number one and two Ash Barty, Naomi Osaka and other names including Venus, Muguruza and Konta amongst others but it may now struggle to attract the top stars. All across Europe the biggest names in tennis have been in action once again as they prepare for Wimbledon with some upsets ahead of the third major of the year putting question marks over their chances. Rain brought an early end to play at London and Birmingham yesterday with not one match completed in London. Today saw a better day for both but first round play in London is still not complicated on a big day across the UK and Europe as the grass court season continues. Jo out! Osaka battles through Sakkari on an action packed day at Birmingham despite the rain!

It’s been a great day in Birmingham! Rain may have upset play in the last couple of matches but the quality of tennis today at the Edgebaston Priory Club has been exceptional. A day which has seen Julia Georges recover from a set down to win also saw wins for Putintseva, Kristyna Pliskova, Martic and world number one Naomi Osaka who saw off a spirited Maria Sakkari. Jo Konta opens with Birmingham win!

16 wins in her last 20. 15 of them on the clay but now we are on the grass. Jo who is ranked back at 18 in the world following an excellent clay court season decided not to play Nottingham with it being so close to the conclusion of her clay court season so is opening her grass season in Birmingham.
