The WTA Finals are in Shenzhen for the first time and offer the biggest prize money in tennis history but the court is terrible! Slow courts and injuries have been a theme at this seasons finale with Naomi Osaka, Bianca Andreescu, Kiki Bertens and Belinda Bencic have all retired with injuries! Petra Kvitova has said they are too slow, Simona Halep has said playing on a slow court after a long season is tough and Belinda Bencic said following her semifinal retirement; I think these courts are terrible for movement of players and for the muscles because it’s like sand, … Continue reading “These courts are terrible” WTA players hit out after four injuries in a week!
Elina Svitolina and Ash Barty will meet in Sunday’s final in Shenzhen but the Saturday has been dominated by yet another injury! This time sadly a set up it was Belinda Bencic who saw her match come to a quicker end than anticipated after winning the first set 7-5. Belinda had the trainer on for her back and was suffering from cramp but couldn’t continue down 7-5 3-6 1-4 to defending champion Elina Svitolina. The second match of the day saw a first meeting in 2019 between the world number one and number two ranked player on the WTA tour. … Continue reading WTA Finals Day 7: Svitolina & Barty through on a day which saw another injury!
Two of the four I expected in the semi-finals are here. It has been an epic week of tennis so far and it’s going to get better as the four remaining players all eye up the Billie Jean King trophy but who will be up against who? Ash Barty v Karolina Pliskova World number one against the world number two in the semi-finals. Pliskova has surprised me, I loved watching her against Halep because we saw everything in her game. We saw lights out tennis at the beginning and at the end the bit in the middle was a bit … Continue reading Who will advance from semi-final Saturday to Shenzhen showdown on Sunday?
No withdrawals or injuries today but good grief I need a lie down after today’s tennis. We now have our semi-finals confirmed for Saturday. Elina Svitolina will take on Belinda Bencic as we know and Ash Barty will get Karolina Pliskova but first what the hell happened today? Elina Svitolina made it three out of three and if you were to ask me at the beginning of the week who would get through to the semi-finals unscathed I wouldn’t have had the Ukrainian down as that person but she has pleasantly surprised us all. Sofia Kenin can walk away with … Continue reading WTA Finals Day 6; 3 out of 3 for Svitolina ✅ Extra money 💰 Kenin provided a test 👍🏻Halep & Pliskova play out a bonkers match! 🤯
World number one Ash Barty is through to the semi-finals of the WTA Finals. A comfortable 6-4 6-2 victory for the Australian in a dominating performance from the debutant who will end the year as number one in the world no matter what happens here. It was another match where the performance from Petra Kvitova was pretty worrying in what was a difficult end to a difficult season for the former Wimbledon champion. Take nothing away from Ash Barty though she showed us her clever all-court game and the thing she did the most which caused issues for Petra was … Continue reading Barty Party goes on as Kvitova’s tough week comes to an end
Bianca Andreescu’s debut at the WTA Finals in Shenzhen has come to an early end. Following her retirement down 3-6 against Karolina Pliskova on Thursday the Canadian had a scan today on her knee and a decision has been made to withdraw from the tournament with Bianca saying; “I had a scan Thursday to check my knee after last night’s match, and unfortunately the results show that I need to withdraw.” There are no more details on the severity of the issue. Bianca’s opponent on Friday was due to be Elina Svitolina who has already qualified for the semi-finals. Second … Continue reading Bianca Andreescu withdraws from WTA Finals with knee injury!
